Chiropractic Care During Pregnancy

At first glance, most people don’t see the connection between chiropractic Care and pregnancy. During pregnancy, there are several physiological and biomechanical changes that occur in preparation for creating the environment for the developing baby. These changes often bring about symptoms that can cause a great deal of discomfort, such as sciatica, low back pain, hip / knee or foot pain, wrist pain and headaches.

Pre-Conception – Chiropractic care prior to conception promotes optimal uterine function and a more regular menstrual cycle. It prepares the body to be strong, supple and balanced as possible to carry the pregnancy. Many couples who thought they were infertile have been helped by restoring proper nerve supply to reproductive organs.

Pregnancy – Regular chiropractic care during pregnancy helps maintain flexibility, alignment and balance. Many report less morning sickness. By reducing the constraining effects of muscles and ligaments on the uterus, the baby can assume the optimal birthing position. Establishing pelvic balance and alignment is essential during your pregnancy. When the pelvis is misaligned it reduces the amount of room available for the developing baby. This restriction is called intrauterine constraint.

Labor and Birth – Mothers who get adjusted report shorter and less traumatic births and less high-tech intervention. Proper nerve supply produces well-timed contractions, helping the baby move more easily through the birth canal. A misaligned pelvis may also make it difficult for the baby to get into the best possible position for delivery. This can affect the mother’s ability to have a natural, non-invasive birth. Breech and posterior positions can interfere with the natural ease of labor and lead to interventions such as c-sections.

Post Delivery – Even natural births can cause stress to a baby. Breastfeeding problems can arise if the baby is unable to comfortably turn its head. Chiropractic adjustments to a newborn use no more pressure than you’d need to test the ripeness of a tomato. You can relax, knowing that we use a light touch to make out adjustments safe, comfortable and effective.

When you begin to experience symptoms, it’s your body’s way of letting you know there is a problem that needs to be dealt with.

Chiropractic Care and Breech Deliveries

Specific chiropractic adjustments can establish balance in the pregnant woman’s pelvis and reduce undue stress to her uterus and supporting ligaments. This balanced state in the pelvis has been clinically shown to allow for optimal fetal positioning. The technique is known as the Webster Technique. This technique has an 82% success rate in turning a breech presenting baby into the normal vertex birthing position – alleviating the need for more drastic medical / surgical interventions.
